Korimako

2026 | Embroidery thread, yarn, and felt on tulle.
Series: What We Cultivate
This series explores themes of gendered labour, botanical colonialism and material practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Korimako was created for my Critical Studies project (2025-2026) for the Bachelor of Creative Media at UCOL and is part of the ongoing series What We Cultivate. I began by weaving with yarn, then free-cut felt and hand-embroidered the korimako. This was my first attempt at surface weaving in the style of Fleur Woods, and it was a pleasant learning experience, allowing for unstructured material experimentation with no end goal in mind. It wasn’t until I had completed the weaving that I felt compelled to add a korimako, in honour of the Māori proverb:

Hutia te rito o te harakeke
kei hea te kōmako e ko?
Ki mai ki au,
he aha te mea nui i te ao?
Maku e ki atu,
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata!

If you cut out the centre of the flax,
where will the bellbird sing?
Say to me,
what is the most important thing in the world?
I will reply,
it is people, it is people, it is people!
